Please join us as Rachel Ginis the founder of LilyPad Homes will investigate the opportunities we have to increase housing options by encouraging the development of second units — Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) or “granny” flats -- as infill housing. Sharing creative solutions and showing us some wonderful examples, Rachel will outline the models, costs and income potential of various types of units, as well as outline the greatest barriers to their development. She will share her work in establishing a simple and inexpensive permitting process for Lilypad Units, a special type of second unit that offers the lowest-cost, lowest-impact and highest benefit of all the new housing options.
Rachel Ginis’ degree in Anthropology focused on global housing patterns. Her advocacy efforts and career as a LEED accreditation designer and a general contractor concentrated her efforts to create more sustainable housing practices. It was, however, a life changing event that led her to develop an innovative model for flexible infill housing that offers a more affordable housing option to both home owners and renters, and to found a nonprofit to help redevelop the way we are living in our homes.
Rachel is a LEED accredited designer and general contractor. She has worked in high-end residential design for over twenty years and is the Founding Director of Lilypad Homes, which was created to:
• provide much-needed housing
• make homeownership more affordable
• house loved ones, caregivers and people who work in the community
• and to create resilient, self-sufficient communities capable of housing critical service providers.
Realizing that policy is a crucial component in the shift to sustainable practices, Rachel has become a strong supporter of sustainable initiatives at the local, state, and federal level. She has a broad knowledge of the intersection between development and policy, and advocates responding to changing social patterns, climate change, and resource limitations, creating diverse, self-reliant communities and a healthier world for our children and generations to come.
