I support Palo Alto Forward because I want other people to have the same opportunities that I had when I came here to start my career almost five years ago. As a recent graduate, I didn’t have a car, didn’t know how to drive, and had negative dollars to my name. Being able to live close to work and still being able to afford the rent made the difference – I could feasibly take one of the only job opportunities available to me in one of the few parts of the country that actually had job growth and full-time positions for entry workers.

I support Palo Alto Forward to encourage efforts that will continue making Palo Alto a vibrant, innovative and inclusive community! In 2006, we bought a tiny, rundown fixerupper, two blocks from University Ave. We traded space to be close to the intellectual heart and social vibrancy of Palo Alto. We love the energy of the neighborhood, the convenience of living that comes with living near stores, restaurants, parks, schools/daycare, libraries, and the promise that anyone can cultivate the next great idea in local coffee shops & offices. Eight years and two kids later, life is still wonderfully convenient, fun, and stimulating, and I hope this lifestyle and these opportunities can be available to as many people as possible, now and for the rest of my lifetime.

Out of college, I became a cancer biologist and focused on finding cures for cancer. Five years down the road, I realized our curative approach to disease is futile when little attention is given to elements of the built environment we live in that have a lasting impact on the health of our planet and our own health. I have come to learn from available literature and data that our present land use and transportation patters are not sustainable in the face of the growing population, changing climate, and limited resources. The good news is that growing communities can enjoy a great quality of life if they take steps to accommodate inevitable growth in proactive, instead of reactive ways. Many of these steps also result in better health outcomes, happier and more resilient communities, and smaller environmental impact. I endorse this group because Palo Alto is my home, I expect to grow old here, and I hope to leave behind a thriving city for my children that is walkable, beautiful, uncongested, and welcoming of people of all ages and socioeconomic backgrounds.

I support Palo Alto Forward because I believe that housing and transportation policy has a tremendous impact on happiness, quality of life and potential. Affordable and diverse housing is the basis for a more diverse and just community, which often leads to a more innovative and fun community. I moved to Palo Alto like many others— drawn by its unique position as a center of innovation, but also attracted by its small city character. I believe that wise policies on housing and transportation will strengthen the reasons I moved here.
